Wells City Council has put in a substantial bid to buy the Portway Annexe which is being sold by Somerset County Council.   Once the girls’ part of Wells Blue School, it was most recently used by Somerset Skills and Learning, who have now moved out.

A large, Grade 2 listed building with plenty of off-street parking, The Portway Annexe offers much scope for use by the community and the council’s Open Spaces team.   Already, a group of charities and good causes has stepped forward as potential users whose rents will help pay for the running of the building.   Reckoned to be worth about £600,000, the City Council would have to borrow money from the Public Works Loan Board and the size of loan it can bid for is usually capped at £500,000.
